About · Michael E. Seem, MD
A surgeon who plans around the person, not the procedure.
Michael E. Seem, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement, including complex primary and revision surgery.

In his own words
I grew up in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and this area has always been home. I attended West Virginia University School of Medicine, completed my orthopaedic surgery residency at Wake Forest University, and then pursued fellowship training in Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction at the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic.
After years away training, I wanted to come back to the community that raised me. Today, my wife, Stephanie, and I are raising our children, Theo and Charlotte, here as well. Having the opportunity to care for patients from the same communities I grew up around gives my work a meaning that extends beyond the operating room.
My approach to joint replacement starts with listening. I often tell patients, “I’m not treating your X-ray.” Imaging helps me understand your joint, but it cannot tell me what your pain is keeping you from doing. Maybe that is walking comfortably, traveling, playing golf, exercising, working in the yard, or keeping up with your family. Understanding what you want to get back to is what allows us to build the right plan together.
That same philosophy drives my interest in technology. I use robotic assistance, computer navigation, augmented reality, and connected recovery tools when they can help me better understand your anatomy, make more informed decisions during surgery, or guide your recovery afterward. Technology never replaces experience or surgical judgment. It is an extension of it.
My goal is not simply to perform an excellent operation. A joint replacement may take less than an hour, but recovery takes months. I want you to feel informed before surgery, supported throughout recovery, and ultimately able to return to the life that matters to you.
That is what The Future of Joint Replacement Is Personal means to me.

How Dr. Seem approaches every case
Every patient comes with different anatomy, different goals, and a different definition of success. Dr. Seem begins by understanding what your joint is keeping you from doing, then builds the treatment plan around you.
Technology can provide greater precision and better information, but it never replaces listening, experience, or judgment. Dr. Seem uses modern surgical and recovery tools when they can help him make more informed decisions and provide more individualized care — from the first consultation through recovery.
I’m not treating your X-ray. I’m treating what your joint is keeping you from doing.
