Preparing for Surgery
A better recovery begins before surgery.
Preparation is not about perfection. It is about reducing avoidable risk, setting realistic expectations, and creating the best possible starting point for recovery.

Understand the plan
Before surgery, you should understand why the procedure is recommended, which operation is planned, the expected benefits and limitations, the major risks, and the anticipated recovery. You are encouraged to ask questions and bring a trusted support person.
Optimize your health
Certain conditions can influence healing and surgical risk. Optimization may involve coordination with your primary care physician or a specialist. Common areas include:
- Diabetes and blood-pressure control
- Heart, lung, and dental health
- Nutrition, anemia, and weight
- Tobacco and nicotine use
- Medication review, including blood thinners
Never stop a prescribed medication without instructions from the appropriate clinician.
Prepare your home
A few practical changes make the first days easier. Most patients do not need to transform their home or buy extensive equipment — the care team can help identify what is actually necessary.
- Remove loose rugs and clutter; create clear walking paths
- Keep everyday items within easy reach
- Set up a comfortable chair with arms
- Arrange transportation and help at home
- Place essentials on the main level if stairs are difficult
Prepare mentally
Recovery is rarely a straight line. Swelling, soreness, fatigue, and disrupted sleep are common early on. Understanding that progress occurs over weeks and months — not hours or days — helps you approach recovery with patience and confidence.
A simple checklist
- I understand the planned procedure.
- I reviewed my medications.
- I completed required testing and clearances.
- I arranged transportation and support.
- I prepared safe walking paths at home.
- I reviewed fasting and arrival instructions.
- I know who to contact with questions.
- I reported any new illness, infection, rash, wound, or dental concern.
